Intake (initial) Sessions Therapy & Assessment - Info & Fee

All services require an initial intake session where we get to learn about you, your story including your mental health journey and struggles as well as your strengths and what your goals in seeking psychology services (therapy and/or assessment). Please note, occasionally in an intake session the psychologist will determine that another service may be better suited to you/your family’s needs. If this is the case, we will talk to you about this and work with you to put you in touch or provide you information to access more appropriate services.

Assessment Services

Wildflower Psychology offers complex private psychometric assessments for a variety of presentations including learning and academic difficulties, cognitive difficulties, attention and concentration difficulties, and suspected neurodivergence (including both ADHD and Autism/ASD). We offer assessments for both adults and children (depending on the type of assessment).

As part of our assessment we conduct an intake session, a comprehensive needs assessment, formal psychometric assessment/s, and provide the young person and their family with a feedback session to communicate the findings. While this is a general overview of the assessment process please note that each person and their strengths and difficulties varies. Because of this, the assessment plan will be tailored to best suit the person and their needs. We also provide a formal report communicating the findings to the person which can be shared with others at the person’s (or their family’s depending on age) discretion.

FAQ Assessment

Does an assessment guarantee a diagnosis?

In short, no, undergoing an assessment does not always result in a diagnosis. Our assessment process is very thorough and there are many factors to consider when doing assessments and considering diagnoses. This also means that a diagnosis provided may not always be what was expected by the young person or family. Any diagnosis provided will be backed up by data obtained and information gathered. This is why we also have a thorough feedback session as part of our service and go through any diagnoses provided and/or why an “expected” diagnosis may not have been the right clinical fit.

Why are assessments costly?

We understand that assessments are sometimes a costly investment. The main reason for this is that the amount of time you see us face to face is not the amount of time put into each assesssment. In addition to the intake session and formal assessment sessions, time is spent gathering further information where applicable, scoring assessments, interpreting results, contextualising scores and results in the wider context, considering possible diagnoses and reasons for those scores and results, and working on recommendations to benefit the young person. Plus of course collating all of this and writing the formal report you will receive as part of your feedback session. We pride ourselves in comprehensive assessments - this typically means that we spend many hours on each of these steps to ensure you get an in-depth comprehensive service.

Do I need to tell people about a diagnosis received?

We do recommend that you share the final report with your regular GP. This is because your GP is your primary point of care for physical and mental health. Sometimes sharing the report or the diagnosis with other services such as the school the young person attends, or their mental health clinician or other allied health such as OT or Speech Pathologist (if they are seeing one) can also be helpful. However this is a suggestion only.

Note. If you receive a medicare rebate for assessment services there may be a requirement to share more information with the GP and other referring medical practitioners.

Please Note. We are not bulk billing service though our therapy session rates are lower the recommended rate set of $300 per 50 minute session set by the Australian Psychological Society.
